Abstract:
With the implementation of the High-Quality Development Plan for the Green Building Materials Industry, China’s green building materials certification system is becoming increasingly improved and standardized. As a renewable biomass material, wood possesses inherent advantages in obtaining green building certification. Structural wood products and engineered wood materials are being rapidly incorporated into green procurement catalogs, further expanding their market application potential.
In 2026, as China’s green building certification framework continues to mature and government procurement policies advance, obtaining green building material certification has become a critical gateway for structural wood products seeking entry into the mainstream construction market.
According to the latest policy direction, by 2026, the number of cities implementing green government procurement policies is expected to exceed 100, while the total number of green building material certification certificates is projected to reach 12,000. This means that government-funded affordable housing, schools, hospitals, as well as large-scale corporate development projects, will prioritize the procurement of certified green building materials.
Wood and wood-based products enjoy strong competitive advantages in green certification due to their renewability, low carbon footprint, and carbon sequestration properties.
At present, the green building materials certification catalog already covers traditional wood products such as plywood, blockboard, flooring, doors, and windows, and is gradually expanding toward structural engineered wood materials. Structural wood products—including glulam, CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber), LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), and prefabricated timber components—are becoming priority categories under the certification system.
Certified companies can benefit not only from national-level policy support, but also from practical local incentives such as preferential financing, tax reductions, and other supportive measures.
Industry experts note that green building material certification is no longer merely a market entry requirement, but also an important indicator of corporate brand value and sustainability competitiveness. Structural wood product manufacturers are encouraged to seize the opportunities presented during China’s upcoming green development cycle, proactively apply for certification, improve carbon footprint documentation, and strengthen product quality standards to capture early advantages in the growing green construction market.
As green building material promotion programs continue to expand into rural areas, demand for sustainable timber housing and wood-structure buildings in rural markets is also expected to increase significantly.
